More Applications for Rope Hoists
Rope hoists are composed of larger components that allow them to withstand the heat created by constant lifting. Ropes made from wire also have higher SWLs (safe working loads) that also make them suitable for heavy lifting. Since they are able to work in conjunction with heavy objects for extended periods of time without overheating, they are often used in:
- Manufacturing – Lifting and lowering heavy loads safely on plant floor allows the work to get done without posing threats to workers
- Shipping and Handling – Wire rope hoists can be used to load and unload trucks and containers quickly and efficiently
- Warehousing and Storage – Our hoists are able to successfully transfer heavy loads in warehouses and factories with minimal downtime, making them ideal for diverse uses

Staying Informed on Rope Hoists
Rope hoists are a great addition to any crane that needs to lift heavy loads effectively and reliably. Here are some FAQs and answers on rope hoists that you can consult to keep your team informed and safe.
What is the history of rope hoists?
Wire rope hoists were first developed in the early 1800s in Germany, designed for use in mining operations. By the late 1800s, electric motors were invented, which led to the use of electric wire rope hoists. Since they were powered by a motor, they were able to lift heavier loads than the previous hand-cranked or steam-powered hoists.
Demag is proud to be a part of this history with our operations coinciding with the development of the technology. Our origins began in 1819 Germany with the founding of the company that would later become Demag. Ever since we have been dedicated to crane solutions, including wire rope hoists.
In more recent years, synthetic rope has also emerged as an option for hoisting applications. Up to 85% lighter than steel, synthetic rope is easier to handle, does not require lubrication and produces less wear on equipment. Its stable structure helps reduce issues such as bird caging, kinks and core protrusion, making it well-suited for heavy-duty, rotation-resistant applications.
Today, rope hoists come in a variety of sizes, capacities and rope types so that each application can have an appropriately sized rope hoist for its intended use.
What are the main components of a rope hoist?
There are a few components that make up a rope hoist. First, you have the drum. It is a rotating cylinder that the rope is wound around. The motor serves as the power source behind the drum, allowing it to turn. Another key component is the brake, which prevents the load from falling if the power on the crane fails. Last but not least, there’s the load hook which is used to attach the load to the hoist and facilitates the transfer of loads.
