Safety needs a common basis
The variety of Demag Drives solutions includes mechanical and electronic components to set your solution in motion. The Demag SCU safety control system serves as a safety net for the user. Integrating safety functions into the control systems of drives and system solutions minimises risks to people and the environment and enables safe and error-free operation.
The intelligent control system can also be used for applications in which safe operation must be guaranteed at various points of a system, e.g. for crane spacing and anti-collision, synchronisation monitoring or when crane spacing is required for static reasons. In addition, the SCU is used to monitor load capacities, for example in crane load monitoring or total load monitoring in cat. 3 PL d.

- Protection of people. Minimisation of the risk of accidents and hazardous movements of the driven machine or system.
- Increased operational safety. Prevention of damage to the specific machine or system and to surrounding machines or systems.
- Increased system availability. The SCU constantly monitors the machine or system, thus ensuring functionality and minimising downtime due to faulty controls.
To achieve this, various functions are integrated into the SCU.
Safety related functions
All safety-related functions are monitored by a redundant system. Within the Demag SCU, two processors work independently of each other and monitor each other. With the help of this control system, signals from emergency stop switches or safety devices such as light barriers or lasers can be processed and evaluated so that a potentially hazardous situation in a system is recognised at an early stage and averted in good time by assuming a safe state. This means that the Demag SCU safety control system is the right choice even in the event of a fault.
The safety procedures can be easily programmed in the control system. The visualisation in graphical blocks helps the operator to quickly understand and supports the logical structure. This makes it easier to integrate various electrical components such as light barriers, laser scanners or load sensors.
Redundant and safe
In safety-critical applications, redundant systems are installed and parameterised which include the Demag SCU safety control system so that it can continue to operate in the event of a fault in the system and independently switch the system to a safe state. This can be, for example, a local direct stop function.
The machine risk is assessed by the SCU safety control unit. The monitoring sensors provide the necessary data for assessing the situation.
Uniform standards require the necessary safety level of a system or machine. The performance level (PL) describes the safety and reliability of a system with its safety levels from a to e. The Demag SCU safety control system allows the construction of systems or machines up to the highest performance level of e.
The right configuration for your project
The Demag SCU safety control system offers a large variety of safety modules and components, and can also be easily adapted to complex or unconventional applications. The safety control system is programmed via an intuitive interface and linked to the system via interfaces. This allows flexible adaptation to the operator’s wishes. The user interfaces (HMI) are used for easy-to-understand monitoring and control.

Assistance and comfort functions
The Demag SCU safety control system supports the system operators by constantly monitoring the system. Due to the modular design of the safety control system, multiple signal sources can be monitored. This has the advantage that the SCU can monitor multiple machines or systems as a control unit and compare system states with each other.
Assistance and comfort functions can be implemented with the help of appropriate parameterisation of the individual units – and the SCU as the control system.

Systems that, due to their complexity and size, can no longer be fully monitored by an operator must be operated with reduced risk by means of the safety functions of the control system.
The designer is also supported during commissioning, for example with the creation of validation reports in the configuration editor of the control system. This facilitates standard-compliant documentation in accordance with the Machinery Directive based on the individual risk analysis.

The Demag SCU control modules are available in different versions and are integrated in the switch cabinet on the control board. They form the mechanical basis for the safety control system. Depending on the application and requirements, the modules can be coupled together.

Demag DRS travel wheels with flanges on both sides ensure the precise running of the extraction hood. Both drive units are controlled via a common Dedrive Compact frequency inverter.
