Demag V-type crane wins German Design Award 2016

  • Winner in the Industry category
  • Award by international panel for unique design innovation
  • Fourth design award for the Demag V-type crane

An international panel of experts from the industry, science and design sectors have awarded the German Design Award 2016 for the Demag V-type crane. The panel referred to its eco-friendly V-type design, which demonstrates “just how functional design can be and the extent to which design applies,” in its statement on the award. This marks the crane’s fourth leading international design prize since it was launched at the end of 2014. The German Design Award is given every year by the German Design Council, which is a foundation that was initiated by the German Federal Parliament. The panel awarded the title of Winner to 10 products in its Industry category. The German Design Award is one of the best-known design competitions in the world and is held in high regard well beyond professional circles. The award ceremony will take place on 12 February 2016 as part of the Ambiente international trade fair in Frankfurt am Main.

In 2015, the Demag V-type crane was already one of the winners of the “iF Design Award 2015”, the “Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015” and the “International Design Excellence Award (IDEA)”. It also won the “Best of INDUSTRIEPREIS 2015” award. The panel members paid tribute to the innovative crane design, which is based on bionic principles. “We are, of course, delighted that the design of our V-type crane has been received so well”, explains Andreas Hambrock, Head of the Universal Cranes business line. “However, the design really took second place in our development activities: it was important for us to develop a crane that meets the most demanding requirements in terms of loads, safety and efficiency.” In a similar way to bone structure, the design only utilises material where it is needed. The V-type profile consisting of vertical struts and tapered diaphragm joints cuts the crane’s deadweight by an average of 17 per cent and, at the same time, doubles its service life to more than 500,000 changes of load. Its oscillation characteristics, which are reduced by 30 per cent, also enable loads to be positioned more quickly and precisely.
