New grab for handling packed rolls
Demag Cranes & Components is presenting a new grab for handling packed rolls of paper.It enables both single items as well as sets of up to four rolls of paper with a total weight of 6 tonnes to be lifted.The new grab makes it possible to significantly increase the handling rates in automatic stores that are served by Process Cranes.
The mechanical grabs are offered in two types.Both sizes are designed for handling rolls that measure between 700 and 3,600 mm in width.For Roll Size Range 1, a grab can pick up single rolls which have a diameter measuring between 750 and 1,350 mm and a total weight of up to 4 tonnes.The larger grab can accommodate rolls that have a diameter measuring between 1,200 mm and 1,600 mm; the maximum load capacity is 6 tonnes.
Safe and reliable handling
To pick up the rolls of paper, the Process Crane is positioned by the warehouse management computer (WMC) exactly above the centre of the roll.The six arms of the mechanical grab carefully enclose the rolls of paper to gently engage the material.The rolls are safely transported to the storage location specified by the WMC with the same contact pressure exerted by all of the arms.
The grab is designed in such a way that the rolls of paper are safely and reliably held, even if two of the six grab jaws fail.Additionally integrated safety circuits – such as the redundantly designed sensors installed in the grab – provide for reliable handling in the automated storage process.
Optimised roll storage
The compact design of the mechanical roll grab makes it possible to achieve a tight storage pattern and, therefore, optimum utilisation of the space available in the automatic store.The packed rolls of paper are piled in stacks that are arranged at a distance of 150 mm from each other for the maximum roll diameter.
The new generation of grabs will be used for the first time in an automatic paper store that is currently being put into service.In this facility, six Process Cranes will automatically store the rolls of paper in a total area measuring more than 12,000 m² and stage them ready for shipping in specific batches when orders are placed.
