Demag cranes for the largest automatic paper reel
shipping store in the world
Demag Cranes & Components has received an order for the supply of seven automated process cranes from Turkey. The cranes are to be used in high cycle operation for the storage and retrieval of paper reels in a shipping store.
Modern Karton Sanayi Ticaret is erecting the largest newly built shipping store for paper reels in the world in Corlu, 180 km west of Istanbul, where the paper reels produced on the new PM4 paper machine, which is also being constructed, will be stored and staged ready for shipping.
Due to the high production capacity of 400000 tonnes per year, the customer required high cycle times in the store from the very beginning. At peak periods, up to 206 reel handling cycles have to be performed per hour. Demag will realise this high throughput rate using seven identical automatic cranes, which will be in operation 24 hours per day. Hoist speeds of up to 70 m/min under load, and 112 m/min without a load and cross-travel speeds up to 120 m/min will enable this demanding performance level to be achieved.
The double-girder cranes operate in the three bays of the store. The cranes each have span of 32.63 m and are fitted with MPW open winch units and vacuum lifting devices. These pick up the various paper reels with diameters up to 1500 mm, a width of 3300 mm and a maximum weight of 4900 kg and stack them vertically up to a height of 15 meters. From there, the reels are then again transported by crane to order to the outfeed stations. The entire store, which measures almost 13000 m² in size, is rated for 4888 stacks of reels and offers a storage capacity of approx. 79000 tonnes when filled to 100% capacity.
Besides delivery of the crane installations, Demag Cranes & Components will also be responsible for the entire warehouse management system, including coordination of the transport system. Thanks to intelligent software, the warehouse management system provides a major contribution towards the realisation of the customer’s specifications.
Demag will carry out the assembly and commissioning as well as the service support in co-operation with its Turkish partner of many years, Genel Makina of Istanbul. Delivery is scheduled for 2007.
